• And there came, like the dry susurrus of wind before thunder peals and lightning, a great rustle of excitement...

Sprott Church, 1971With his Brownie camera, William Christenberry took a photograph of this church, which he describes as being “isolated in the landscape.” The picture, which was processed at a drugstore, has “haunted” Christenberry to this day. It was the first in a series of photographs of the building.William Christenberry/Aperture Foundation

One last word about the speed of the cheetahs. To begin with, one should remember that when they are apparently running fast, they are by no means running their fastest. Any one who has had experience with cats will realize that it is extremely difficult, owing to their peculiar temperament, to train them to perform any action out of keeping with their normal behavior. Cheetahs would probably never run at their maximum speed on a track. Furthermore, it is doubtful if they would sustain their greatest effort for any distance beyond two hundred yards. But in their natural habitat, when pursuing buck, their final charge is terrific. It must surely attain a speed of sixty-five or seventy-five miles an hour — for a hundred or more yards.
